<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The placement\u00a0of a dental implant is a simple surgical procedure that does not involve any major risk to health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, some complications may appear:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pain<\/strong>: although it is reasonable to worry about pain in oral surgery, most patients do not complain of any pain after implant placement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, in order to ensure recovery under the best possible conditions, we prescribe pain killers like Paracetamol\u00a0(Dafalgan\u00a9) 1G<\/a>\u00a0 and\/or anti-inflammatories like\u00a0Ibuprofen\u00a0(Brufen\u00a9 ou Irfen\u00a9) 400mg<\/a>, to be taken only in case of pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Infection<\/strong>\u00a0: during the surgical placement of a dental implant, all the precautions concerning asepsis are observed and generally a preventative antibiotic treatment is begun the day before the surgery. Despite these assiduous measures, some patients develop post-operative infection. This discomfort is usually treated by an additional week of antibiotic therapy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The success rate of implant surgery is currently very high according to scientific studies (\u2265 95%), but sometimes implants do not fit well into the bone and need to be removed. In this case, it generally will be possible to implant\u00a0a new one after waiting for a healing time of several months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nerve Damage<\/strong>: the planning of the placement of an implant is done in a highly-calculated and precise way using digital or 3D x-rays, which make it possible to measure the height of bone available above the alveolar nerve and thus choose the implant of an adequate length so as not to touch this nerve when inserted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This nerve, which lies within the lower jaw, is particularly\u00a0sensitive and gives sensation to the jaw and the teeth, the skin of the cheek, the lip and the chin as well as the edge of the tongue of the affected side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thus, in spite of these precautions, it is possible that the nerve canal is perforated or that the area is irritated by the surgical procedure and the patient can then experience tingling or numbness in one of the regions concerned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most of the time these situations are temporary and disappear in the days or weeks that follow, but in rare cases they can be permanent and\/or painful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
