However, information critical to the proposed surgery may not be available on such pictures (orientation, old radiological films, radiographs printed on paper). In these cases, we&nbsp;may suggest&nbsp;a supplemental view&nbsp;in our office during your consultation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Different Types of Films\/Images Obtained For the Assessment of Problems Related to the Oral and Maxillofacial Area:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Periapical Radiographs:&nbsp;<\/strong>(2-Dimensions)&nbsp;usually obtained from your dentist and serve to see very small anatomical structures, limited to a tooth or bone tissue around a tooth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Panoramic View:<\/strong>&nbsp;(2D) commonly used&nbsp;because it allows, in a single shot (a rotation around the patient\u2019s head), to see the main anatomical relationships between teeth, jaw bones and important structures such as the inferior&nbsp;alveolar nerve or maxillary sinuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because it is a two-dimensional image, it is not possible to know whether certain structures are in front of or behind certain others, such as the alveolar nerve passing in front of, behind or in the middle of the roots of a wisdom tooth. To obtain this information, additional procedures are required (3D imaging).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>CT Scan:<\/strong>&nbsp;These images are required when the physician (surgeon) needs to obtain accurate information about the three-dimensional ratios of hard (bone) and soft tissues (muscles, blood vessels, nerves etc.). This type of examination will be done in hospitals or in an imaging center upon request of your maxillofacial surgeon and they will be transferred to him by a CD, which will be given to you at the end of the examination. This technique requires several x-ray passes over the area of interest along a helical path and corresponds to about 200 to 300 times the radiation dose required for a panoramic radiograph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Cone Beam CT:<\/strong>&nbsp;(2D&nbsp;or 3D) part of the latest imaging technique developed ten years ago and becoming more and more efficient from the point of view of the quality and the precision of the images and with lower doses of radiation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This x-ray&nbsp;machine performs a single revolution around the patient\u2019s head and allows the direct acquisition of a volume, such as the maxilla with sinuses, mandible and orbits (depending on the chosen field). This volume can then be \u201ccut\u201d into slices by the computer to allow the two-dimensional visualization of each zone in the three planes of space or makes it possible to reconstitute a panoramic x-ray. This new imaging technique allows extremely precise anatomical diagnosis in bone tissue (which is the main focus of maxillofacial surgeons) with a much lower dose of radiation than medical scanners. It is less suitable for soft tissue diagnosis. The radiation dose is approximately equivalent to that of a conventional panoramic radiography or even less. The size of the voxels (3D pixel) being relatively small with these scanners (0.125 mm), the resolution of the images is clearly superior to that of the medical scanners which is of minimum 0.625 mm of thickness of cut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><strong>Costs and Coverage by Basic Insurance:<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Costs&nbsp;:&nbsp;<\/strong>The cost of a panoramic radiography performed with the Cone Beam is the same as that of your dentist (about CHF180) and that of a 3D image equivalent to the medical scanner is between CHF250-450, depending on the volume concerned. If the scanner or OPT is performed as part of a medical or dental treatment covered by the KVG (it will be determined on a case-by-case basis by your surgeon), it will be covered by your basic health insurance.
