When missing a greater volume of bone, such as in labio-palate bone defects, after severe trauma or after removal of certain tumors, the graft should be taken from other places on the patient to obtain a greater volume of bone. For example, the hip bone (iliac crest transplant) and in this case the procedure is done in a hospital (or private clinic) under general anesthesia and requires a stay of one or two nights.
