About the intervention
The inside of the mouth is lined with a special skin called oral mucosa, which is normally smooth and pink. Any change in the appearance of this mucosa may be a sign of an underlying (local or systemic) disease, sometimes serious.
Any suspected signs such as those described here should be shown to a maxillofacial surgeon or stomatologist:
- Red (erythroplastic) or white (leukoplastic) spots
- An ulcer that does not heal or bleeds easily
- A bump or thickened skin inside the mouth
- A sore throat or chronic hoarseness
- Difficulty swallowing or chewing
These changes may occur in the lips, cheeks, palate, gums, tongue, face or neck. They are not always painful, which is why, in case of doubts, it is imperative to consult.
We recommend that you visit your dentist on a regular basis (once a year), who can be alerted by a suspicious lesion and refer you to a maxillofacial surgeon. Remember that the mouth is one of the most important alert systems in the body. Do not ignore the signals it gives you and call us in case of a suspicious lesion.
